수능특강 26강 2번에서 아래의 문장의 구조가 상당이 어려워서 논란이 된 적이 있었는데, 혹시나 도움이 될까해서 공유해봅니다.

"... Rituals, ceremonial occasions marking significant events such as weddings, graduations, and important holidays, are often events

which are dressed for, where categories considered important by a society are visually displayed for all to see and appreciate. ..."

제가 이 문장을 처음 봤을 때는, 위 문장의 관계절 [ ] 속에, 주어인 "people" 이 원 지문에서 오타로 빠진 비문법적인 문장이라고 생각했었고, 즉,

Rituals are often events [which people are dressed for], ...

= Rituals are often events [for which // people are dressed], ... 이렇게 주어인 "people" 이 있어야만 한다고 추론했었습니다.

이를 모 카페에서 논의 중에 한 분이, 이는 올바른 문장이고, 그 근거로 아래의 예문을 제시했었습니다;

• someone must have slept on the bed.

=> the bed must have been slept on.

=> the bed [which must have been slept on].

즉, "일부의 자동사는 전치사의 목적어를 수동태의 주어로 상승시켜서 수동태를 만들 수 있다"는 논리입니다. 그렇다면, 논란의 위 지문도 과연 이 범주에

해당이 될 것인가가 젤 관건이었고, 원어민 문법웹에 문의해본 결과, 뜻밖에도 (제가 젤 신뢰하는 The Grammar Exchange과 Englishforums.com 를

포함해서 3곳 모두),

1) "The bed is slept in by him"과 같은 구조로, 전치사의 목적어인 "these event"가 수동태의 주어로 상승한 문장이 맞다.

2) 하지만,

- "이 문장 자체로는 a little awkward (not a good sentence, not common but it's not wrong) 하다.

- 왜냐면, 원어민들은 "They are dressed (up) for Halloween.' 와 같이 'dressed (up) for"를 수동태가 아닌, 형용사구의 구조로 사용하며, 이런 기준

으론 "passive voice: Halloween is dressed up for by them."도 역시 awkward 하고,

- 대부분의 원어민들은 다른 방식의 표현을 사용한다" 라고 합니다.

3) "events are dressed for by people"을 paraphrasing 하면, 그 의미는 "events which people feel the need to dress in formal clothes for

in order to attend" 와 같다고 합니다.

4) * The Grammar Exchange 에서 생각하는 젤 자연스러운 표현 ;

events that are dressed (up) for => events that people dress (up) for, or events that people get dressed (up) for. (= 0)

= They get dressed up for the sake of attending the events. (= 0) (They are not already dressed (up) for the events.)

즉, events를 주어로 해서 "events that are dressed (up) for"로 쓰면, 수동태가 안되는 것은 아니지만, 대개 "dressed (up) for"은 형용사구의

표현으로 "이미 착용한 상태"를 가르키는 경우가 많으므로 awkward 하게 들린다.

결국, 사람 주어로 능동의 "people dress (up) for events" 또는 수동의 "people get dressed (up) for events" 가 젤 자연스러운 "(행사를 위해)

착용한다 라는 동작"을 가르키는 표현이다 라는 얘기가 됩니다.
