안녕하세요.  문의에 대한 답변 드립니다.  

해당 문장에서 "he"로 지칭된 인물은 Kinnebrook입니다. 

지문만 보면 혼동될 수도 있겠으나 관련 에피소드에 대해 서술된 다른 문헌을 확인해 보면 Kinnebrook임을 알 수 있으며,

바로 앞 문장의 주어가 Kinnebrook이므로 문맥 상에서도 유추가 가능합니다.

여담으로 이 문제를 공유하는 이유에 대해서 설명하도록 하겠습니다.

His attention이 누구를 지칭하는지에 대한 학생 문의가 들어와서 저는 Kinnebrook 이라고 알려주고 그래도 확실한 답을 위해서 EBS Q&A 게시판 이용 결과 답변 내용이 선생님들마다 달랐습니다. 

결국 문의를 했고 교재부 답변을 받았습니다. 참고로 답지를 읽어보시면 Maskelyne 인듯 Kinnebrook인듯 이중적으로 "그의"라고 표현해서 논란이 많았습니다. 

가르치실때 유용하게 사용하셨으면 합니다.

<그 당시 제 질문:

his attention 여기 Kinnebrook의 attention 아닌가요? It's ambious until the next sentence when the structure switches the focus. It says "then M dismissed him" so before it said that it was discussking Kinnebrook. Kinnebrook's error of recording the times differently was found by Maskelyne. "His attention was called to" means that Kinnebrook was unaware of it before Masklyne told him. Further we can infer that the "he/his" being discussed is Kinnebrook because of the sentence "M then dismissed him" so the sentences before have been describing how Kinnbrook was made aware of the error, you would think he would do somehting to change it but it just got worse, and Kinnebrook was fired. His attention was called to the error(by Maskelyn) means Maskelyn asked Kinnebrook to look through the error he had made. Who can insruct this? It's Maskelyne. Not Kinnebrook.
